Rolling Hills Zoo Visits Learn and Grow Depot
Rolling Hills Zoo came to Learn and Grow Depot in Abilene
recently, bringing some live animals, stories, and education. Matthew
Griekspoor, Education Outreach Coordinator at the zoo, began the program
by reading the story “Lazy Lion” to the children. Later in the program,
he also read the story “Giraffes Can’t Dance”.
During
the program, the children saw and touched a lion skull, a lion pelt, a
snow leopard pelt, a live red-footed tortoise, an alligator skull, a
live ferret, an ostrich egg and ostrich foot, a giraffe pelt, and a live
three-banded armadillo.
Some
of the children helped with a demonstration that showed the “wing-span”
and hand size of an orangutan compared to a human. Two cut-out wooden
hands attached to a chain were stretched out approximately seven feet to
simulate the “wing-span” of the orangutan. Children were able to
compare their hand-size to the size of an orangutan. There were a lot of
smiles and laughs during the interactive program.
