Interactive event helps students honor and celebrate the privileges and responsibilities of U.S. citizenship.

Using an iPad, a student creates a Presidential collage during a Constitution Day event

Constitution Day programs will be held again this year at the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum, and Boyhood Home. The interactive event, designed for 4th and 5th grade students, will be offered between September 15 and 23. Kansas recognizes the week containing September 17, the date the U.S. Constitution was signed, as Celebrate Freedom Week.

The program helps students honor and celebrate the privileges and responsibilities of U.S. citizenship, as well as commemorate the signing of the Constitution. Space is still available for schools to participate. Reservations should be made by September 12 by calling 785-263-6754 or emailing Pam.Sanfilippo@nara.gov.
The event includes four 30-minute participatory student activities. Groups of 20-25 students will rotate through the four stations:
Activity 1: "Holding History" - Students will examine copies of letters from the Library's archives written by children to President Eisenhower. Discussion will include topics of that period in history and how citizens can interact with the Executive Branch of government.
Activity 2: "If I Were President I Would..." - Following a discussion of several current topics, students will write or draw something that describes what they would do to address the issues if they were president.
Activity 3: "Becoming the President" - Students will discuss the Constitutional requirements for being president, learn about Eisenhower's qualifications, and consider slogans they might use for their own presidential campaign.

Activity 4: "Presidential Pics" - In the Presidential Gallery of the Museum, students will create a collage using iPads provided by the Eisenhower Foundation.

Eddie Delahunt Presented by Bonebrake Promotions at GPT in Abilene, Kansas

Irish Folk Singer, Eddie Delahunt performs August 27th at Great Plains Theatre

Abilene, KS, August 23, 2107:  Great Plains Theatre and Bonebrake Productions opens its first of a ten concert series with Eddie Delahunt an Irish folk musician, on Saturday, August 27th at 7pm, at Great Plains Theatre, 401 Cottage Avenue, Abilene.  Delahunt born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, came to America in 1989 with rucksack in hand and guitar on his shoulder.  Delahunt opened in America with a 2-week gig at pub in Kansas City and the rest is history.  Since he began his music career, Delahunt has released numerous CD's.  His latest CD is Whiskey, Wakes, and Weddings, revisits traditional favorites with some new material.  "Performing is the best feeling of all," says Eddie, "it's never the same twice.  I never use a set list as one song begets another, and one crowd is, of course, different than another.  A nice applause is always appreciated, but putting a smile on someone's face or a tear in their eye-that's magic."  Delahunt's music features traditional Irish ballads, energized guitar riffs, and original lyrics and tunes.  "Eddie's Irish charm is infectious," says James Holland, Producer of Bonebrake Promotions.

Bonebrake Promotions and Great Plains Theatre are producing a series of ten concerts to perform in Abilene between August and February 2017.    "We had a great partnership with Bonebrake Promotions before we lost the building in 2014," states Elizabeth Weese, Executive Director of Great Plains Theatre, "and James and I have renewed the partnership to bring a variety of music back to GPT and Abilene."  Hollands says, "I relish the opportunity to have live music back in Abilene on a consistent basis."    For more information about upcoming events please visit our website at greatplainstheatre.com.

Tickets to the Eddie Delahunt concert are $10 for general admission or you may reserve a table for $60 which includes four tickets. Tickets maybe be purchased by calling 785.263.4574 or by visiting our website at greatplainstheatre.com.

Bridge Benefit Raises Funds for Education Programs at Eisenhower Presidential Library

Bridge Benefit Raises Funds for Education Programs at Eisenhower Presidential Library

Abilene ACBL member David Mills presents the traveling trophy to Ardy Alexander and Beverly Gochis.
The Abilene American Contract Bridge League Club and the Eisenhower Foundation partnered to hold the third annual Dwight D. Eisenhower Bridge Benefit on July 30. The game and additional donations raised $1,394 to benefit IKEducation, the Foundation's K-12 program that provides programs free of charge at the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum and Boyhood Home. In addition, proceeds from the event will be used to develop a new initiative - teaching bridge at after school programs.

A record 86 people played in the beautiful Eisenhower Presidential Library Courtyard.
Partners Ardy Alexander, Hutchinson, Kansas, and Beverly Gochis, Wichita, Kansas, were awarded the traveling trophy for winning the overall game with a score of 66.22%.

The Eisenhower Bridge Benefit was created to pique people's interest in the incredibly challenging and rewarding game of duplicate bridge, while promoting the extraordinary legacy of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Ike earned the unofficial nicknames of 'Bridge Player in Chief' and 'The Patron President of Bridge Players' over the 56 years he played the game.

The Abilene ACBL and the Eisenhower Foundation are thrilled this has become a tradition and look forward to awarding the Dwight D. Eisenhower Bridge Benefit traveling trophy to the winning team next summer. Next year's event will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. in the Eisenhower Presidential Library Courtyard.

Acupuncturist Pleased with Licensing Law

Acupuncturist Pleased with Licensing Law

Governor Brownback signing the Kansas Acupuncture Practice Act with members of the Kansas Association of Oriental Medicine & legislators.

Kansas has joined 45 other states in regulating and licensing professional acupuncturists with the signing of the Kansas Acupuncture Practice Act.  The Kansas Association of Oriental Medicine has worked to pass law to this effect for over fifteen years.  The Association says the new licensing requirements for acupuncturists protect both patients and acupuncturists.  Patients will now be assured that their acupuncturist is qualified with a license, and acupuncturists are now allowed to practice legally in Kansas as health care professionals. The new law goes into effect June 2017.

Rhonda K. Bathurst, acupuncturist at Memorial Health System’s Comprehensive Pain Solutions, is an active member of the Kansas Association of Oriental Medicine and she serves on the organization’s legislative committee. Bathurst is very pleased that Kansas is now licensing acupuncturists and requiring entry level competencies for practice to protect patients.  She states, “The new law protects the public, defines the practice scope, and recognizes acupuncturists as independent health care professionals.”

Bathurst is a graduate of Kansas State University and American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine.  She is a board certified Diplomate of Oriental Medicine by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and maintains acupuncturist licenses in New York and California. Bathurst also serves on the board of directors of the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine where she was appointed chair of the Public Policy Committee last year. Bathurst brings over twenty years of experience to patients receiving acupuncturist services in Comprehensive Pain Solutions.

Vintage Base Ball Game is Aug. 6 at Ted Power Field

Vintage Base Ball Game is Aug. 6 at Ted Power Field

Eisenhower Presidential Library  sponsors Victorian era base ball game

A vintage base ball game will be played Saturday, Aug. 6 at 1:00 p.m. The game is sponsored by the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum and Boyhood Home and in the past has been played on the grounds of the Library. New this year, the game will be played at Ted Power Field, Eisenhower Park, during the Central Kansas Free Fair.

Fair-goers can head over to Ted Power Field to catch the action as the "Abilene Iron Cutters" face the "Wichita Bull Stockings" of the Cowtown Vintage Base Ball Club. The players don uniforms from the 1860s and play with the kind of equipment used in that era. The event is free and open to the public.

The game is played using base ball rules from the Victorian era, which are quite different from today's game. For example, outfielders can catch the ball on one bounce for an out and base stealing and sliding are prohibited. Crowd participation is highly encouraged and often impacts the rulings on the field.

"This is a fun event, recreating the game from a bygone era," said Tim Rives, Acting Director, Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum. "We encourage individuals and families to take advantage of this great 'Americana' experience.
